How to upgrade an electric scooter?

With the growing popularity of electric scooters, users are looking for new ways to improve the performance of their vehicles. For the best results, opt to replace crucial parts.

A scooter upgrade is a process of modifying an electric scooter to increase its power, speed, performance and overall safety. It can be carried out in a variety of ways, from changing the tyres, replacing the battery pack or motor, to software modifications.

It all depends on the effect you would like to achieve. Some upgrades you can carry out yourself, others are better left to specialists. Remember that for your convenience, we can perform all the upgrades in our workshop.

Which Electric Scooter Is Best?

Replacing the motor with a more powerful one will not only increase the speed but also the acceleration. In addition, you’ll be able to climb steeper hills. To get the most out of a new engine, install a larger battery to maintain similar vehicle performance on a single charge.

For the Xiaomi scooters, a 500W motor will be a significant improvement. Choose this part to replace the built-in 250W rated model (in the standard vehicles) or the 300W model (in the Pro series scooters). Combined with a 48V battery, the new motor will allow you to reach a maximum speed of up to 48 km/h.

Remember, when replacing the motor with a more powerful one, use an improved controller with higher power and voltage. In addition to the spare parts mentioned, the speed of the scooter is also influenced by the uploaded software, the weight of the user or outdoor temperature, among other factors.

How to increase the range of an electric scooter?

The electric scooter’s maximum range is affected by many factors: riding style, speed, weight of the user, type of surface, and even temperature. Replacing the battery with a larger and more efficient one will allow you to cover greater distances.

Another way to significantly increase the range of your vehicle is to install an external battery. It’s usually mounted on the handlebar column of the scooter. The accessory comes in a waterproof, shock-resistant package, so you don't have to worry about its durability.

Depending on the battery size you choose, you’ll be able to cover a greater distance. The way you use the vehicle won't change: you'll be charging it the same as before.

Electric Scooter Range: Examples

If you feel like you're bouncing over every bump in the road, even the smallest ones, it's time to replace your tyres with a more comfortable model.

In general, a larger diameter tyre (within the wheel’s dimensions) is more shock-absorbent, and a deeper tread is better suited to rough roads or off-road terrain. There are three types of electric scooter tyres to choose from. Choose the one that better suits your requirements:

  • Pneumatic tube tyres have an inner tube inside for a comfortable ride. Unfortunately, they’re vulnerable to damage and therefore are the least durable tyres.
  • Tubeless pneumatic tyres are safer than tubeless tyres as there is no risk of the inner tube puncturing and suddenly losing pressure. They can still be damaged if driven over a sharp object.
  • Solid tyres consist of tough rubber that can’t be damaged by punctures. They are slightly harder and less flexible than the previous models. We recommend choosing Honeycomb models with shock-absorbing holes that significantly improve ride comfort.

The installation of cushioned suspension also significantly increases riding comfort. It helps to absorb shocks and vibrations on uneven surfaces. It’s usually mounted between the frame and the wheel or the handlebars and the frame.

Both front and rear suspensions are available for most scooter models. This part extends the life of sensitive vehicle components: batteries, controller and motor.

When upgrading a Xiaomi electric scooter or any other vehicle, don't forget about improving safety. Check if the brakes are working correctly and responding quickly enough. If in doubt, consider replacing them. Additional accessories will also help you feel more confident on the road:

  • Side mirrors allow you to see what's going on behind you without turning your head.
  • Indicators allow you to signal a change of direction without taking your hands off the steering wheel.
  • Powerful front lights allow you not only to see further ahead but also make you more visible.
  • Reflective stickers to make your vehicle visible on a dark road.
  • Protective clothingProtective clothing, i.e. helmet, goggles and knee pads, will provide additional protection in case of a fall.
  • A scooter left outside is easy to steal. Therefore, don’t take unnecessary risks and additionally secure your vehicle against theft. For this purpose, you can use a traditional bicycle chain lock. Attach it to the vehicle just under the front wheel or near the rear mudguard. It’s a lightweight option, but it can be cut with special scissors. An alternative is a U-lock which is mounted on the handlebars. Unfortunately, it weighs much more and takes up a lot of space in a rucksack.

If you need additional protection, choose the disc lock. It attaches to the brake disc, so you don't have to look for any fence or post to attach your vehicle to. The lock takes up little space and doesn’t weigh much. More advanced models have a built-in alarm that sounds when the scooter is moved. Additionally, a GPS transmitter can also be used.
